What is NSO?
Overview
NSO (National Science Olympiad) is the flagship science competition by Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). It evaluates students' understanding of science concepts, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking for Classes 1–12.
Conducted across 46+ countries with over 55,000 schools participating, NSO is one of India's most widely recognized school-level Olympiads.
Exam Pattern

Level 1 (School Level)
- Mode: Offline (OMR) conducted at school
- Questions: 35 MCQs (Classes 1–4) or 50 MCQs (Classes 5–12)
- Duration: 1 hour
- Sections: Science (Conceptual) + Logical Reasoning + Achievers Section
- No negative marking
Level 2 (National Level)
- Top 5% students per class from each zone qualify
- Top 25 rank holders zone-wise
- Class toppers from schools with 10+ participants

- Classes: 1 to 12 (all boards — CBSE, ICSE, State)
- Registration: Through school coordinator or individual at sofworld.org
- Fee: ₹125 (through school) / ₹175 (individual)
- Schedule: October–December annually

Syllabus
NSO syllabus follows the CBSE/ICSE school curriculum with extra emphasis on application-based thinking:
- Classes 1–5: Plants & Animals, Food, Shelter, Water, Air, Materials, Light, Sound, Force
- Classes 6–8: Living World, Matter, Energy, Earth Science, Environment
- Classes 9–10: Physics (Motion, Light, Electricity), Chemistry (Atoms, Reactions), Biology (Life Processes, Heredity)
- Classes 11–12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Maths as per CBSE board syllabus
Achievers Section: Higher-order thinking, application-based questions (carries more marks per question).
